Bangalore Traffic do we have sollutions?

Here is my post to Honorable Home Minister of Karnataka. If you can suggest any good sollutions or alternatives to this suggestion we can take it up to Honorable Home Minister. Please do the needful...

********************************************

Honorable Home Minister,

I am pleased to introduce myself as Dhruva Kumar Avadhany, Managing Director of a fledgling software firm, Samartha InfoSolutions. With respect to the vehicular traffic situation with Bangalore city, I have a suggestion that we had implemented in one of our erstwhile organization's (HP) parking lot, for controlling the number of vehicles to be parked, thereby overcoming the limitation of parking sp ace and this scheme has worked very well.

What we have done is, we have disallowed certain vehicles on the basis of the last digit of its registration number, on specific working days. This has helped reduce around 20% of vehicles on each day and saved a lot of fuel to individuals and to the nation. And more importantly, it helped provide parking space for the rest. The system goes like this. We use to work 5 days a week. Vehicles with Registration Numbers ending with 1 and 2, are not allowed on Mondays. Similarly 3 & 4 on Tuesdays, 5 & 6 on Wednesdays and so on. Since we have peak traffic on these working days we can apply the same technique to all the private vehicles that are in Bangalore, provided there is no legal issue. Also, spreading awareness amongst our people through a media campaign and requesting them to adopt this policy, may help speedy implementation of this unique scheme.

Saying some thing is easy, but executing the same demands commitment and dedication. So let me start from my own end. My vehicle number is 2254 and I will not use my vehicle on any of the Tuesdays between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM within Bangalore urban limits. It is my small gesture to ease Bangalore Traffic. And, I further promise to inform all my friends and colleagues to take a similar step in easing our Bangalore traffic flow. Also, I humbly suggest that if we seek inputs from the general public, we may get other innovative proposals and good suggestions. This will bring to fore, the Voice of the Common Man.

Last, but not the least, I humbly request that you use your distinguished office to advise/instruct major companies, including Software Giants within Bangalore, to implement the above innovative vehicular usage policy within their organizations, in order to make a beginning.

Sincerely

Dhruva Kumar

for the Government and for the People.

  2. This just does not ease the traffic flow, bu t also , reduces the corbon emmision and hence controls GLobal Warming, Environmental Pollution, sound pollution and saving of non-renewable energy like Oil.
Also, our Public Transport system should be upgraded. Like the Volvo buses that are running, or it could be metro or what ever. The govt should promote this. using of public transportation system. This can only be done only when, the public transport system is flaw less and very smooth operating one. I have heard that, this policy is being implemented in Singapoore.

They will put hell lot of tax on 'own vehicle users' and at the same time, they will reduce the tax for public transport system, so that they can reduce the fair and give good quality of service.

  3. I guess what you are suggesting is a form of carpooling and HOV lanes on freeways in the US. However - enforcing rules does not take into account alternatives for folks with diasallowed registration numbers on the respective days. Why not have lucrative benefits for folks who carpool? The method has been proven to work. Examples range from convenient parking spots for carpoolers in the company's parking lot to High occupancy vehicle lanes on freeways.

  4. I am posting few suggestions to Govt.. recd via mail from my friend ..

Here are some suggestions to assuage Bangalore's traffic problem:

•Stop registering new vehicle - say for 6 months
•Stop all vehicles older than 15 year from plying in Bangalore roads
•Use Singapore model of levying steep tariffs to drive in Central Business District
•Strictly enforce lane discipline - violators to be treated as criminals
•Fine traffic offenses heavily. Cancel repeat offenders' license
    •Discourage cars with single passengers
•Adopt incentives for car pooling like priority lanes
•Clear-cut Sign boards for No Parking, road directions, Road Repair work, lane directions
    •Dividers & Reflectors on Dividers!!
•Proper driving tests before issuing Licenses.

  5. Dhruva - I agree with your solutions in general. However, these are sacrifices that we are expecting the public to make and sacrifices should come in the last when we run out of all the options. Moreover, this may reduce the traffic and will only cover up the actual problem. Unless the problem is treated at it's root, we will continue to run into these issues.

75% of the problems - Oil consumption, pollution, road rages, accidents etc., - arise due to lawlessness, recklessness and lack of respect for fellow drivers. Govt. can act tough with penalties etc.,, but it's difficult to enforce as we are dealing with high numbers.

Only way is to change the psychology of the people and the onus is on people like us that are educated. We do marathons, ralleys etc., without objectives. For ex., 70000 people participated in a marathon in Mumbai to show their unity against terrorism... Would that raffle a single feather of terrorists?. In what way that will reduce the terrorism? There was another run organized by green activists against Metro as they are felling the trees. For me that's against development and will serve no purpose.

Instead if they ran with placards indicating their fellow citizens to follow traffic rules such as "I promise that I follow traffic rules", "I respect fellow drivers", "I don't make others to suffer to save my 5 seconds of time" etc., it would made some impact on the public.

Govt and public service organizations can run extensive programmes in TVs and Radios explaining the silly blunders people make such as going in opposite lane, jumping the signals, blocking other vehicles by stopping in the wrong lane etc., with example.

I just encountered this again today. One auto fellow that was supposed to go straight was blocking the traffic by waiting in the left most lane. At least 50 vehicles stopped behind him just idling for 2 minutes... Look at cumulative time wasted and the oil drained due to idling.

We can pick up daily examples like this and come up with a Tele-film.. All we need would be a Video camera, few recordings and negotiation with TV channels such as TV5 or TV9.

If you are willing, I am ready.
